There’s just something about Lake Tahoe that provides the perfect balance of tranquility and excitement, which made it the perfect location for our 2018 BREWPUBLIK Team Retreat. The weekend was a perfect opportunity for the entire BREWPUBLIK team to come together, allow a few new members to finally meet those that work on the opposite coast – and of course to have some good old quality bonding time!
Our house was the quintessential Tahoe ski home – built into the side of an enormous hill, complete with a fire pit, awesome porch and (of course) a stocked fridge. The retreat kicked off with Charlie and Sam (CEO and COO) splitting everyone up into smaller teams for an ongoing competition that spanned the whole weekend. The teams were based on who works together day-to-day least frequently, in order to maximize team bonding potential.
After a delicious breakfast served up by Brandon (who got to show off his insane culinary skills all weekend), we hiked a few miles in gorgeous Burton Creek State Park that overlooks the lake. At the top of the hike, each team member spent some time discussing their particular role and the nuances of the market that they operate in. This brought the team together and provided a better understanding of the small, market-specific details and how BREWPUBLIK operates as a whole.
Later on that evening, each of us took a personality test to better understand which of the Myers Briggs personality type categories we fall into. Our team had a nearly even split between introverts and extroverts, and we also discovered some interesting quirks about each team member that will hopefully lead us to better communicate, resolve conflict and more effectively work with one another down the road.
And since no team retreat would be complete without checking out a few local breweries, the team headed into town and dropped into a few local spots. We started at FiftyFifty Brewing, an awesome brew pub located in the heart of Truckee, with an amazing beer lineup and an even better outdoor patio. The team sampled of few beers from the collection of award-winning Eclipse Imperial Stouts, and also tried a few on tap including the Snowberry Tart Sour and the West Coast Haze IPA (the crowd favorite).
After an impromptu photoshoot using a few cool backdrops we found in Truckee, a few of the team members kept the brewery tour going and stopped by Alibi Ale Works next. Offering a beer selection spanning from a Hibiscus Peppercorn Saison to an Orange Creamsicle DIPA, everyone found a brew that they loved. The only thing missing was a performer on Alibi’s live music stage – guess we will just have to take another trip back on a Friday or Saturday night.
We spent the final beautiful day of the retreat out on the lake (is it ever not a perfect day in Tahoe?) Our super chill driver Bobby took us to all of the lake’s best spots. He pointed out a few iconic Tahoe homes, took us to “Little Bermuda” where the water is a vibrant shade of turquoise, and there was also some cliff jumping involved. Alex and Abe immediately swam over to the massive 30-foot rock cliff, although most of us (the sane ones) stuck with the more reasonable 15-foot jump.
During the trip, the team brainstormed a ton of new ideas and also discussed how to improve BREWPUBLIK’s existing practices in order to better serve all of our clients. After a few days of exploring, bonding, brainstorming and (probably) a little too much sun, it’s back to work – but the entire team is recharged, refreshed and ready to take on the second half of 2018 with a bang!
